How
many people have been injured by Meridia?
Public
citizens submitted a petition to the FDA saying that
Meridia caused 29 deaths and hundreds of serious side
effects. They contend that the risks outweigh
this benefit. Of the 29 U.S. patients that died,
19 of the deaths were from cardiovascular causes such
as heart attacks. 10 of the cardiac deaths occurred
with people who were 50 or younger, including 3 women
under the age of 30. There were also 143 patients in
whom an arrhythmia was reported.
Is
the FDA investigating?
The
FDA will consider public citizen's petition.
Who
is the Public Citizen?
Public
Citizen is a national, nonprofit consumer advocacy organization
founded by Ralph Nader in 1971 to represent consumer
interests in Congress, the executive branch and the
courts. So far, Public Citizen has petitioned for the
removal of four other FDA approved drugs since 1996
and three of the drugs ended up being banned and one
severely restricted. Public Citizen finds the Meridia
side effects to be just as dangerous to individuals.
